Volume of common solids

Volume is the amount of space a solid takes up, measured in cubic units. This volume calculator covers the shapes that come up most: box, cube, sphere, cylinder, cone, and rectangular pyramid. Choose one and it asks only for the measurements that shape needs, then shows the cubic volume and the formula behind it.

The formulas

A box is length times width times height, and a cube is a side cubed. A cylinder is pi times the radius squared times the height, the area of the circular base times how tall it is. The volume of a sphere is four-thirds pi times the radius cubed. The volume of a cone is one-third of the matching cylinder, and a pyramid is one-third of the matching box, which is why both carry that one-third factor.

Units of volume

The volume comes out in the cube of whatever unit you enter, so centimetres give cubic centimetres and metres give cubic metres. Keep every measurement in the same unit. One litre equals 1,000 cubic centimetres, which is handy when a result needs to be read as a capacity rather than a raw volume.

A worked example

For a cylinder with a radius of 2 and a height of 10, the volume is pi times 2 squared times 10, which is pi times 4 times 10, about 125.66 cubic units. For a sphere with a radius of 3, the volume is four-thirds pi times 3 cubed, about 113.10 cubic units.

How do I find the volume of a box?

Multiply length by width by height. For a 2 by 3 by 4 box, the volume is 24 cubic units. Choose Box and enter the three dimensions.

How do I find the volume of a cylinder?

Multiply pi by the radius squared by the height. It is the circular base area times the height. The tool does this when you choose Cylinder.

Why are the cone and pyramid one-third?

A cone fills exactly one-third of the cylinder that shares its base and height, and a pyramid fills one-third of the matching box. That geometric fact gives both the one-third factor.
