Extracting audio from a video
This tool handles extract audio from video jobs, taking the audio track out and saving it as an MP3, so you can keep a lecture, an interview, or a piece of music without carrying the video around. An mp4 to mp3 job, or any rip audio task from a file you own, works the same way. It does not re-encode the picture at all, it discards it, which makes converting video to audio one of the quicker jobs here. It handles MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and most other common containers.
Your file is never uploaded
The conversion happens on your own device. The first time you open a video tool your browser downloads a converter of about 31 MB, and after that it is cached, so later visits start straight away. Nothing is downloaded until you choose a file, and the video itself never leaves your machine, which matters because video files are large and often personal. There is no size cap, because there is no upload to cap.
Choosing a bitrate
The bitrate sets the trade-off between file size and sound quality. 128 kbps is fine for speech and gives the smallest file. 192 kbps is a good default for music and is the one selected here. 256 and 320 kbps are higher quality and proportionally larger. Note that the quality of the original audio sets a ceiling: exporting at 320 kbps cannot add detail the video did not have.
Speed and long recordings
Because everything runs in your browser rather than on a server, speed depends on your device. A few minutes of audio is usually quick. A long recording, such as a two-hour lecture, will take noticeably longer and use more memory, and a phone will be slower than a laptop. Leave the tab open while it works.
Only files you have the right to convert
This tool converts files you already have on your device. It cannot fetch anything from a website or a streaming service, and it is not a downloader. Please only convert video you own or otherwise have the right to use.
FAQ
How do I convert a video to MP3?
Choose the video, pick a bitrate, and press Extract MP3. The audio track is copied out and encoded as an MP3 you can download. Nothing is uploaded.
Does it work with MP4 and MOV?
Yes. MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV and most common video formats work, since the tool reads the container and takes the audio track from it.
Why is there a one-time download?
The converter itself is a program of about 31 MB that runs in your browser. It downloads once, then your browser caches it, so later conversions start immediately.
What bitrate should I choose?
192 kbps suits most music and is the default. Use 128 kbps for speech to save space, or 256 to 320 kbps if the original audio is high quality and you want to keep as much as possible.
Is my video uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely on your device and the file never leaves it.
