How to use the credit card payoff calculator

  1. Choose to work by monthly payment or by target months.
  2. Enter your card balance and its APR.
  3. Enter the payment, or the number of months you want.
  4. Read the time to clear it and the interest it costs.

How credit card payoff is worked out

This credit card payoff calculator has two modes. Given a fixed monthly payment, it works out the months to pay off the balance and the total interest along the way, so you can plan to pay off credit card balances fast and clear the credit card debt. Given a target number of months, it works out the payment you need. Both use your APR converted to a monthly rate, and both assume you stop adding new charges to the card.

Why minimum payments cost so much

Credit card interest is high and it compounds, so paying only the minimum stretches a balance out for years and multiplies the interest. If a payment barely exceeds the monthly interest, almost none of it reduces the balance. The tool flags the case where a payment is too small to cover the interest at all, which means the balance would never fall.

Paying it off faster

The fastest way to cut credit card interest is to pay more than the minimum each month, since every extra amount comes straight off the balance and removes future interest. Switching to the target-months mode shows exactly what payment clears the card by a date you choose, which can make a plan feel concrete.

An estimate, not financial advice

Real cards can change the APR, charge fees, and apply interest daily, and any new spending changes the picture. Use your card's current APR and treat this as a planning estimate. This is not financial advice.

FAQ

How long will it take to pay off my credit card?

Enter the balance, APR, and your monthly payment. The tool shows the number of months to clear it and the total interest, assuming no new charges.

Why does paying the minimum take so long?

Minimum payments are set low, so most of each one goes to interest and the balance falls slowly. On a high APR this can stretch to many years and a lot of interest.

What payment clears my card by a set date?

Switch to the target-months mode and enter the number of months. The tool returns the monthly payment needed to clear the balance in that time.

What if my payment does not cover the interest?

Then the balance never falls. The tool warns you when the payment is at or below the first month's interest, so you can raise it.

Is my information private?
