Why iPhones save photos as HEIC

Since iOS 11 in 2017, iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It holds the same photo as a JPG at about half the file size, which saves space on your phone. The catch is that many websites, older Windows PCs, and some Android phones cannot open a HEIC file. That is when you need a JPG.

When you need a JPG instead

JPG is the format almost everything accepts. Upload forms for jobs, visas, and schools often reject HEIC. Email programs may not preview it. Older photo editors cannot open it.
