How to work out fuel cost

  1. Pick miles and MPG, or km and litres per 100 km.
  2. Type the trip distance.
  3. Type your fuel economy and the fuel price.
  4. See the total fuel cost and how much fuel the trip uses.

What the tool works out

Give it the distance, how much fuel your vehicle uses, and the price of fuel, and it shows the fuel cost for a trip along with the litres or gallons you will burn. It works for petrol or diesel, and for any currency, since the math does not care about the money symbol.

Trip cost by fuel economy

Here is the gas cost of a 200-mile trip at a fuel price of 3.50 per gallon, for a few MPG figures. A more efficient car uses less fuel, so the cost of fuel drops.

MPG Fuel used Trip cost
20 10.0 gal 35.00
25 8.0 gal 28.00
30 6.7 gal 23.45
35 5.7 gal 20.00
40 5.0 gal 17.50

Two ways to enter economy

Miles per gallon rises for a thriftier car, while litres per 100 km falls. The tool takes either one, so use whichever your dashboard shows. One US gallon is 3.785 litres, which is worth knowing if you mix the two.

FAQ

How do I work out the fuel cost for a trip?

Type the distance, your fuel economy, and the fuel price. The tool multiplies the fuel used by the price to give the trip cost. It works the same for a petrol cost or a diesel cost.

Does it use miles or kilometres?

Both. Switch the unit buttons to miles with MPG, or kilometres with litres per 100 km, and the labels change to match.

Can I use it for petrol or diesel?

Yes. Enter the price of whatever fuel you use. The cost of fuel is worked out the same way for either one.

What if I know my cost per mile?

The result also shows the cost per mile or per 100 km, so you can check it against your own figure.

Are my numbers private?

Yes. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is saved.
