The three scales

Celsius is used in most of the world for weather and cooking. Fahrenheit is used in the United States. Kelvin is used in science. This tool links all three, so you can go from a weather report in Celsius to Fahrenheit, or from Celsius to Kelvin for a class, in one step.

A couple of fixed points

Water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius, which is 32 degrees Fahrenheit, and boils at 100 Celsius, which is 212 Fahrenheit. Kelvin starts at absolute zero, the coldest possible temperature, so it never goes below zero. One neat fact: minus 40 is the same number in Celsius and Fahrenheit, the one point where the two scales meet.

Why the scales differ

Celsius and Fahrenheit put their zero and their steps in different places, so converting takes a small formula, not just a factor. Kelvin uses the same step size as Celsius but shifts the zero down to absolute zero. The tool applies the right formula for each direction so you do not have to.
