How to work out sales tax
- Choose Add tax or Remove tax.
- Type the amount.
- Type the sales tax rate.
- See the price before tax, the tax, and the total.
Add tax or remove tax
Add tax starts from a price before tax and shows the tax and the final total, the price with tax. Remove tax does the reverse: you type a total that already includes tax and it finds the price before tax and the tax hidden inside. Both are common, and mixing them up is the usual slip.
Tax on a 100 item
Here is what a few sales tax rates add to a price of 100. Scale it to your own price.
| Rate | Tax | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 5% | 5.00 | 105.00 |
| 7% | 7.00 | 107.00 |
| 8% | 8.00 | 108.00 |
| 10% | 10.00 | 110.00 |
Rates change by place
In the United States, the sales tax rate is set by the state and often by the county and city too, so the same item can cost more one town over. There is no single national rate. Use the rate box for whatever applies where you buy, or check your receipt.
FAQ
How do I add sales tax to a price?
Choose Add tax, type the price and the sales tax rate, and the tool shows the price with tax and the tax amount. It works as a plain tax calculator for any rate.
How does reverse sales tax work?
Choose Remove tax and type the total that includes tax. The tool divides by 1 plus the rate to find the price before tax, which is the correct way, not subtracting the rate.
What sales tax rate should I use?
Use the combined rate for your state, county, and city. Rates differ by place and change over time, so check a recent receipt or your local tax office.
Is sales tax the same as VAT?
They are similar ideas but not the same system. If you need value added tax, use the VAT calculator instead.
Are my numbers private?
Yes. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is saved.
