How to calculate with fractions
- Type the top and bottom of the first fraction.
- Pick add, subtract, multiply, or divide.
- Type the second fraction.
- See the answer in simplest form, as a mixed number, and as a decimal.
What it does
The tool works with two fractions at a time. It can add fractions, subtract fractions, multiply fractions, and divide fractions, then reduce the answer to its simplest form. It also shows the result as a mixed number and as a decimal, so you get the shape you need.
How each step works
To add or subtract, the fractions are put over a common bottom number first, then the tops are combined. To multiply, the tops multiply and the bottoms multiply. To divide, the tool flips the second fraction and multiplies. Whatever the step, the answer is then simplified by dividing top and bottom by their largest common factor, so 2/4 shows as 1/2.

FAQ
How do I add fractions with different bottoms?
Type both fractions and choose add. The tool puts them over a common bottom number, adds the tops, and simplifies. You do not need to find the common bottom yourself.
How do I simplify a fraction?
Enter it as the first fraction, multiply by 1/1, and read the simplest form, or just use any operation. To simplify fraction values, the answer is always reduced by the largest common factor.
How do I turn a fraction into a decimal?
The result shows the decimal next to the fraction. The fraction to decimal step just divides the top number by the bottom number.
Can it handle negative fractions?
Yes. Put a minus sign on the top number. The answer keeps the sign on top.
Are my numbers private?
Yes. The fraction calculator runs in your browser and nothing is saved.
